HAN (한 han) was born on September 14, 2000 (age 24) in Incheon, South Korea. He is a rapper, producer and vocalist of the boy group Stray Kids.[1]

Predebut

Han Ji-sung lived in Malaysia but in 2015, he moved back to South Korea to pass the high school exam. He made a deal with his parents that if he does not succeed in getting into an entertainment agency within a year, he would go back to Malaysia to study.[2] At the same time, he took dance, rap and vocal classes at D.E.F. Academy in Seoul.[3]

A few days after passing the exam, Ji-sung auditioned for a company and heard about a JYP Entertainment audition taking place at the same time. Eventually, he auditioned there as well with rapping. He passed the first round and was asked to come for a second round, after which he was accepted into JYPE, making him the second member to join the future lineup.[4]

In 2016, Ji-sung formed a hip hop crew called 3RACHA with fellow trainees Bang Chan (CB97) and Seo Chang-bin (SPEARB), where he used the stage name "J.ONE". They uploaded self-composed extended plays on SoundCloud throughout 2017.

Ji-sung was officially revealed by the company on October 13, 2017 for his participation in the upcoming survival show Stray Kids[5] and was introduced with the roles "Rap", "Vocal" and "Producing" on the show. On the final episode on December 19, it was confirmed that Ji-sung would debut with the boy group Stray Kids.

2018-present: Stray Kids

On March 26, 2018, Ji-sung debuted under the stage name "HAN" with the mini album I am NOT as the lead rapper, producer, and vocalist of Stray Kids.[6]

Since 2020, he regularly releases self composed songs as part of the SKZ-RECORD series to showcase his own artistry.

In December 2022, HAN participated in writing and composing his solo song "RUN" for the best album SKZ-REPLAY.

On February 3, 2023, HAN was promoted as a regular member of KOMCA.[7]

On April 2024, he released his first song featuring another artist with "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" featuring Bae of NMIXX, as part of the SKZ-RECORD series.

On December 13, 2024, HAN participated in writing and composing his original solo song "Hold my hand" for Stray Kids' album HOP.

Artistry

Rap, vocals, dance

HAN started off as a rapper and member of producer unit 3RACHA, but he broke the boundaries of positions multiple times. He is in charge of high notes since the predebut song "Hellevator" and has shown vocal prowess on Stray Kids' performance of "Pray (I'll Be Your Man)" at Kingdom: Legendary War. While not being a dancer, he is often noticed for his energy and facial expressions on stage. HAN is called an all-rounder for being able to showcase equally good rap, vocal, and performance skills.[8]

Songwriting

His personal identity as an artist is quite different from that of Stray Kids. While he delivers his lines with spitting energy in the group's hype songs, he likes to use lyrical genres in his own. He particularly likes rock, R&B and emo hip-hop .[9] His solo songs like "Alien" or those he writes for the group like "CHILL", are part of what the fans but also the members call the "HAN genre" or "HANpop".[10] They are recognizable songs, tackling personal and often melancholic subjects with figurative language. He said he finds a lot of inspiration from animes and storylines he creates in his head.

HAN's songwriting is also prolific. He often mentions having written a song from start to finish in a few hours, like "CHILL" and "Want so BAD", and talked about having over thirty songs he discarded.[11]

Inspirations

HAN always liked rock music due to his dad being part of a rock band. Hip-hop artists like Epik High and Zico inspired him to write songs, and he became interested in singing when he heard Zion.T's "Two Melodies".[12]
