Predebut
In 2016, Changbin joined JYP Entertainment through an audition with a self composed rap song, making him the fifth member to join the future lineup.[2] He formed a hip-hop crew called 3RACHA with trainees Bang Chan ("CB97") and Han Ji-sung ("J.One"), where he used the stage name "SPEARB". They uploaded self-composed extended plays on SoundCloud throughout 2017.
He was officially revealed by the company on October 12, 2017 for his participation in the upcoming survival show Stray Kids[3] and was introduced with the roles "Producer" and "Rap" on the show. On the final episode on December 19, it was confirmed that Changbin would debut with the boy group Stray Kids.
2018-present: Stray Kids
On March 26, 2018, Changbin debuted with the mini album I am NOT as the main rapper and producer of Stray Kids.[4]
On May 17, 2020, he released the self composed song "Streetlight" featuring Bang Chan as part of the SKZ-PLAYER series.
On October 23, 2020, he released the self composed song "Cypher" as part of the SKZ-RECORD series.
On December 21, 2022, Changbin participated in writing and composing his original solo song "DOODLE" for the compilation album SKZ-REPLAY.
On September 1, 2023, he released the song "Fly High" composed and sang by himself, as part of a campaign for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
On February 5, 2024, Changbin released the remake song "8th grader (Respect your dreams)" with South Korean singer Kim Chang-wan, as part of the campaign for the Samsung Galaxy S24.
On October 15, 2024, he featured on the track "VAY" of ITZY's ninth mini album GOLD, of which he was in charge of writing and composition.
Artistry
Changbin's rap is recognizable to its scratchy feeling and intensity. His voice can switch from a deep, husky tone to a nasally, high pitched tone, giving a rough feeling. He is known for having a very loud voice which can be heard easily even without a microphone. His performance aspects include coolness, charisma and darkness. He used to have a rap tag, "YAW".[5]
Despite his gritty image, he has shown his ability to sing in a soft tone, and some songs feature melodic rap parts. His own songs, like "Mixtape : On Track", tend to be more melodic.
